Despite a tumultuous 2025, volatility and uncertainty have failed to quell the investment appetite that has fuelled what some analysts have labelled “an everything rally”. Whether it’s talk of an AI bubble, unpredictable trade wars, increasing government debt across the Western world, or weakening labour markets, investor enthusiasm remains at all-time highs. As we look to 2026, many are wondering if the exuberance is sustainable and if outlier risks are starting to percolate.

The complexity and diversity of risk factors across asset classes creates a challenge for those who are assessing and responding to unforeseen scenarios. While some analysts can pinpoint potential risks, it is often the risks below the surface that cause portfolios to unravel.

It is these outlier scenarios – the less obvious and perhaps more unusual events that fall outside of our day-to-day experience – and their impact on portfolios at a position level that risk managers need to watch. Black Swans, by their nature, are unforeseeable, so risk managers need to simulate a broad range of scenarios in real time to test every inch of a portfolio. Using real-time market data to feed risk models with live market conditions is essential to isolating specific market impacts at a position level.

Are you operating three steps ahead?

Risk management teams are already under pressure. While markets have trended upwards, many risk managers have remained vigilant. We are in a much better position than we were a decade ago. Powerful risk systems have transformed workflows and capabilities. Where before, tracking and understanding the impact of disparate outlier scenarios would have been time-consuming, now, real-time stress testing complements routine end-of-day risk analytics like VaR, ensuring teams are more than one step ahead.

So how can teams that have not already integrated fast, granular stress testing into their workflows or technology protect their portfolios and institutions?

  • Identify and isolate granular exposures: Risk teams must be able to view the impact of outlier scenarios at a position level. During a risk event, it is sometimes granular exposures that can present contagion risk throughout a portfolio. Identifying these issues early is essential; teams must be able to decompose risk factors at a position level by stress testing a specific aspect of a portfolio – displaying the impact before and after the stress is applied to reveal any sensitivities.
  • Dial the shock: Market events are varied and complex in nature. To be effective, teams need to be able to run stresses across all asset classes, whether in equities, commodities, credit, FX, crypto, or another asset class, to be able configure complex multi-variate scenarios, and see the impact of each factor on each instrument. This does not reduce the importance of testing simple global risk events, such as a shock to all equity volume by 30%, for example. However, risk managers also need to be able to dial up more complex risk events that impact multiple asset classes, and risk factors, and gauge the impact on specific positions.
  • Develop outlier scenarios: Developing outlier scenarios can test a risk management team’s ingenuity. While managers can run historical lookbacks, using historical events as a basis of stress inputs, the true value in real-time stress testing is the ability to quickly build new scenarios that test outliers. This is particularly important in the current market context, where impacts are becoming more difficult to gauge. For example, in previous downturns such as in 2008, a decrease in the equity markets led to a move to cash (driving up USD). However, this year, tariff volatility caused USD and equities to fall, while hard assets such as gold increased. Risk systems that operate in real time and offer granularity are therefore essential to test these very real outlier events.

Prepare for the unprecedented

Traders and risk managers know downturns are inevitable. As investors look ahead to 2026, it is important to be able to react instantly to nascent risk events where correlations start to deviate from norms.

Integrating real-time stress testing into workflows has never been more essential. Powerful and flexible risk management systems are a blank canvas for clever risk managers. Without the speed and detail offered by modern risk management systems, financial institutions are at a significant disadvantage. Having the capabilities to test the impact of these situations with full transparency into the results is more vital than ever.
