TS Imagine’s team attended the Fixed Income Leaders Summit in Amsterdam in October, where one theme dominated most conversations: data. Across the buy side, financial institutions are grappling with how to make sense of a fragmented, unstructured data landscape, and how to turn that data into meaningful insight and alpha.

We believe that the answer to this challenge lies in artificial intelligence (AI), which delivers the speed, depth, and precision of insight that now define competitive edge in fixed income.

The fixed income data challenge

Fixed income has grown so sophisticated and electronic that trading firms, like their peers in equities, now depend on accurate, timely market data. But unlike equities, fixed income spans multiple sub-asset classes, tailored instruments, and millions of securities, so building a complete picture of this market is far more complex.

In recent years, the ongoing electronification of bond markets has only amplified that complexity. Even in formerly opaque and relatively illiquid corners of the bond market, new electronic venues, protocols, and liquidity providers are proliferating, deepening fragmentation.

For the buy side, the challenge is urgent: How can financial institutions source, ingest, and normalize all this data? And most importantly, how can they extract genuine insight from it?

The complete picture

Achieving a 360-degree view of the markets requires connections to multiple data sources, not just for pricing data but also reference data like ISINs and CUSIPs, all governed by the appropriate licences. Crucially, a lot of valuable data lives in unstructured formats like PDFs, emails or chat logs.

Once collected (structured and unstructured), this data must be normalized, made machine-readable, and brought into a consolidated view on one screen.

That’s no small feat. TS Imagine, for instance, has invested over 43,000 person-hours building the data infrastructure behind solutions like our integrated execution management system TradeSmart.

But structured data, while a heavy lift, is just the beginning. How can a user parse billions of data points to detect trading signals, identify liquidity, and benchmark dealer performance?

The next frontier: AI-powered insight

This is where generative AI is transforming fixed income trading, enabling traders, quantitative finance specialists, analysts, and risk officers to interrogate rich datasets simply by asking questions in natural language.

So how is this happening?

Until quite recently, visual analytics tools were considered the gold standard for analytics. These platforms convert raw data into charts and other visualizations, helping humans spot patterns and trends. Yet for advanced users like financial institutions, these systems can be cumbersome. Many still require IT support or skilled developers to craft SQL queries and maintain data pipelines.

Generative AI removes much of that friction. Just as anyone can ask ChatGPT to design a holiday itinerary or design a workout plan in plain English, a trader can now query a specialized large language model with a question like, “Which bonds have seen tighter bid-offer spreads in the last 48 hours in the telecommunications sector with maturity in the next 5 years in Germany, Italy and Spain” — and receive an instant, data-driven answer. The trader can also ask follow-up queries, slice and dice by sector or credit rating, or drill down to the level of the CUSIP or ISIN for a deeper look.

This approach democratizes data access, as even junior traders or analysts can explore datasets independently, guided by AI agents that respond conversationally and provide full audit trails of how responses were generated.

And when implemented correctly, AI can enhance security. For example, TS Imagine has partnered with cloud-based data platform Snowflake since 2021, allowing us to offer our clients generative AI at scale. TS Imagine’s LLMs run within Snowflake’s secure and governed architecture, so data never leaves its protected perimeter. That’s a combination of speed, scalability, and security that legacy analytics tools can’t match.

Speed to insight is the new edge

The future of fixed income is unpredictable. Volatility, geopolitics, and monetary policy combine to drive fragmentation, while electronification accelerates. But AI turns the industry’s biggest challenge — too much, too messy data — into its biggest opportunity. The future for bond trading will belong, not to those financial institutions that have the most data, but to those who can turn it into actionable insight the fastest.
